Tid Bits of Happenings In the 9 months since I've moved to Boquete, growth has been phenominal. The effects are not always good. This is a mountainside near my house that has been purchased by a developer. One day the big yellow machines showed up and the mountain began to be stripped away for roads.
Then, before I could say "Golly Gee Whiz, Batman" this sign appeared at the side of the road...now you've got to see my road to really appreciate this...it's a nice little residential road. A simple bribe (probably $20) would buy the agreement of the local official who approves signs.
The website for this is www.paloaltomountainclub.com They say there will be 48 homesites, 90 condos (15 buildings of 6 condos each), a 40 room hotel and a clubhouse with pool. Now by US standards this isn't big....but for tiny little Boquete it is massive. And, this is only one of 37 new developments that have received approval to build. This makes me so sad.....things will change here very fast. Luckily, my house is away from most of the development....except for this one and a very upscale one up the road from me. Boquete is now known as the most expensive and with the most ExPats of any place in Panama other than Panama City. YIKES! Thank God I bought my house before the prices went up so high. The average, newly built American style home that has been lived in a year is selling for $400,000. So much for cheap real estate. I got mine just in time. |
